Acoustic validation of Li-ion battery fire precursors
A microphone array confirmed sound changes that appear before gas release is detected from a battery.

Project overview
- Site
- Battery safety test environment
- Target
- Li-ion battery cell
- Data
- Multichannel microphone array audio, temperature and gas records
- Objective
- Confirm acoustic precursors before gas release and validate real-time detection
- Client
- Korean manufacturer D
- Duration
- Validation in progress
Field problem
AGV and AMR battery fires have to be handled before thermal runaway spreads. Smoke and flame detection reacts after ignition, so earlier signals were needed.
XyloZero deployment
A multichannel microphone array recorded batteries during heating tests, and the sound before the confirmed gas release was analyzed against that reference event.
- Multichannel microphone array placed around the test battery
- Confirmed gas release recorded as the reference event
- Temperature and gas records aligned with the audio timeline
Analysis
- Band energy changes before the reference event
- Separate detectors for sustained broadband rise and short single events
- Backtest of earlier test recordings with the same criteria
Results
- Broadband sound rise caught before confirmed gas release in every analyzable test
- Real-time detection algorithm developed and backtested
- Detection rate and false alarms to be checked in new tests and site noise
